On Monday 13th March our Project Manager Brian Russell was pleased to attend a celebratory presentation for reaching one of their key milestones. They shipped 200,000 PC and laptops in to African and South American countries since they were established in 1998.

RE are very proud of the Working Partnership Agreement they maintain with Computer Aid. RE have been refurbishing PCs for Computer Aid for over 5 years and which the relationship between the two organisations continues to grow

At the celebration event in London, Tom Butcher, External Relations Manager, at The Met Office explained “donated PCs to Computer Aid have helped National Meteorological Services in Kenya, Uganda and Zambia to digitise weather observations which are used to help rural communities make better weather dependant decisions. This type of weather information helps farmers to decide when to plant their crops and which varieties, or combinations of crops, to plant to secure the best yields possible. Poor crop yields can have a devastating and long term impact on a farmer’s livelihood as well as food security for an entire community. The digitised observations are also vital to improve weather forecasts and severe weather warnings over Africa.”

This is just one project operated by Computer Aid that has had a massive impact on people’s lives. Many of the PCs donated to RE are refurbished and are going out across Africa helping many people in many different situations. RE refurbish upwards of 250 PCs a month on behalf of Computer Aid International.

Over the past few weeks we have been carrying a major review on all our data wiping procedures.

In the past few months the number of loose hard drives we receive from a company has increased drastically. This has been due mainly to companies removing their hard drives from equipment prior to collection due to the worries of data security.

RE have now built a new Data Wiping Rig to handle the increasing numbers of single hard drives we receive. Over the next few weeks we are looking to develop this rig so that we will be able to offer a service to data wipe drives on customer’s premises, for those companies that have a higher data security risk.

We are now in the position again were single hard drives come into the building and are data wiped within a few hours of arriving.
